A new series was developed by Jeffery Matthews in 1971 following the introduction of decimal currency, based on the Machin definitives.
The current pictorial series started in 1999 with Scottish and Welsh stamps, with Northern Irish stamps being introduced in 2001 and English stamps later that year. The stamps are valid for use throughout the UK.
